Summer Landscape Tips

Summer is the hardest time on most plants, with the lack of rains, hot temperatures, blazing sun and the dry winds it seems like Mother Nature is always working against us and our landscape. Water management is the easiest way to ensure that your plants stay healthy and your wallet doesn't suffer unnecessary damage as well.

One thing to remember with water is that more is not always the best thing.

If you can cycle your schedule into 2 or 3 shorter runtimes, you can make sure that the water goes into the ground where it's needed and not out into the streets and gutters.

You should also try to schedule to water in the early AM as this will help keep the water from evaporating out of the warm ground. Sometime right before sunup would be perfect.

Make sure that you watch your landscape because some plants do not require as much water as others and you may find that it is not necessary to water every station for that 10 or 15 minutes. You may find that it takes a lot less time that you originally thought.

Always make sure you check your irrigation system at least once or twice a month just to make sure that there are no broken lines or sprinklers. Water is essentially money and when you have a broken sprinkler you are literally dumping your hard earned cash down the drain.

One final note, if you do find that the summer monthly water bill is too high for your liking, you can try removing one of your water days from the schedule, this can help reduce your water usage by 10 - 15 percent and help lower that bill as well.

Good luck with all of your gardening and hopefully your thumb stays green just like your landscape.
